Yvonne Joyce Craig

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16 1937 - August 17 15th, 2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer best known for her role in the role of Batgirl in the 1960s' television series Batman as well as her role as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post referred to her as "a pioneer in female super heroes" on television. Yvonne Craig was born in Taylorville, Illinois, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Her family moved to Dallas in 1951. She was a student at W. H. Adamson High School, Sunset High School and then W. H. Adamson High School. The only problem was that Craig didn't graduate since she had not received "one PE credit". After being discovered by Alexandra Danilova, a ballerina as well as an instructor, Craig joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as the youngest corps de ballet member. It was a great training that enabled her to do stunts in the role of Batgirl. In 1957 she left the ballet company because of disputes regarding casting changes. She later moved to Los Angeles with the hope of continuing her dancing career. But, she found herself appearing in film roles. She first appeared in a TV episode of Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover"), alongside Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later became Batgirl's Police Commissioner James Gordon. After her appearances in The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story (all 1959), and Gidget (all 1958) she also appeared as Beverly Mills on the TV show Mr. Lucky (also 1959). Craig was seen in the films Bing Crosby and Seven Women from Hell (1960), in which she was cast alongside Cesar Romero. In 1962, she guest-starred on the Western Laramie in the episode "The Long Road Back".Craig starred in roles with Elvis Presley in two films: It Happened at the World's Fair (1963) and Kissin' Cousins (1964). In the year 1966, she was a part-time actress in Mars Needs Women. In 1967, she was a Russian ballet dancer in In Like Flint.
